Type of Camping: On island / land based. Old railroad bed area.
Mileage to Other Points of Interest:
Stephen C. Foster State Park – 2 miles
Big Water – 13 miles

Floyds Island – 11 miles
Notes: There is a lot of room to spread out at Mixons Hammock. Plenty of options for hammock
campers. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE FOLLOWING: Insects can be a nuisance here in all but
the coldest days and nights; have a robust insect repellent plan! Even in December, January, insects
can be intolerable, especially at sunrise, sunset and during the early evening hours.
Has a fire ring for campfires. Has vault/pit toilet.
Cell Phone Service: Been here many times and personally never had service, but have been told
that others had intermittent service. The larger Stephen C. Foster State Park area of the Refuge is
notorious for having unreliable cell phone service. Do not rely on it here. **Please keep in mind
service can vary based on carrier, type of phone, weather and sky conditions. Cell phone service is
never guaranteed in Okefenokee and this is based on individual experience.
